Luck of the Irish Fig, Cherry & CBD Hemp Soda Bread

Ingredients:
  • 2 1/2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 2/3 cup organic quick oats
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/3 cup Hemp Hearts Raw Shelled Hemp Seeds
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 3/4 cups buttermilk
  • 2 tsp Brothers Brothers Wild Rosin Honey
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup chopped soft dried figs
  • 1/2 cup chopped tart dried Montmorency cherries
  • 1 tsp Hemp Hearts Raw Shelled Hemp Seeds (for top)
Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Whisk together all-purpose flour, whole wheat flour, oats, 1/3 cup hemp, salt, baking powder and baking soda in large bowl. Whisk together buttermilk, 2 tsp Brothers Wild Rosin Honey and egg in another bowl; pour over flour mixture and stir until ragged dough forms.
  3. Add in figs and cherries; stir until well mixed.
  4. Turn dough onto floured work surface; knead once or twice and form into a ball. Transfer to prepared baking sheet.
  5. Sprinkle top with 1 tsp hemp seeds.
  6. Flatten our dough into a 7-inch round. Using a sharp knife, mark the top with shallow 4-inch long "X."
  7. Bake for 40 minutes or until your bread is a deep golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on bottom. Let cool on rack 30 minutes before slicing. Serve warm with a drizzle of Brothers Wild Rosin Honey.

A Little Bit About Irish Soda Bread

Apart from potatoes and Shepherd’s Pie, Irish Soda Bread is probably the most recognizable dish from the Emerald Isle. This classic dish is baked in droves in the weeks and days leading up to Saint Patrick’s Day.

The bread dates back to the late 1830s, when the first iteration of baking soda was introduced to the U.K. Irish Soda Bread was born of necessity – it makes the most of the basic, inexpensive ingredients available at the time in a politically unstable and economically depressed Ireland. The main ingredients are “soft” wheat flour, baking soda, salt and soured milk. Even families who lived in simple farmhouses without ovens could make this simple, filling bread in iron pots or griddles over open hearths.

This unique cooking method resulted in the signature dense texture, hard crust and slight sourness that soda bread is known for! Loaves are traditionally marked with a cross on the top, to ward off evil spirits and protect the household. Despite its humble origin, Irish Soda Bread is a honored part of Ireland’s culinary and cultural identity. There’s even a Society For the Preservation of Irish Soda Bread!

A Modern Twist, with a CBD Recipe

No matter how you celebrate St. Patrick’s Day – with whiskey and/or a pint of green Guinness – make sure you soak it all up with a hearty slice of our Fig, Cherry & CBD Hemp Soda Bread! We’ve taken a spin on the traditional recipe, adding in dried fruit and of course, CBD! The dried fruit in our recipe makes it a particularly good match for some sharp Irish cheese. Serve up our soda bread warm, with some aged Irish cheddar or blue cheese, and a drizzle of Brothers Wild Rosin Honey.*
