Oh, Sleepless Night…

There’s nothing worse than waking up in the middle of the night, suddenly unable to fall back asleep. You spend the next few fitful hours tossing and turning, staring into your phone or at the clock, trying to will your body back to sleep. Before you know it, it’s time to wake up. Read on for our top five all natural tips to help you fall back asleep (and stay asleep through the night).

1. Don’t Watch The Clock

One of the worst things you can do when you wake up in the middle of the night is laying there in the dark, staring at your clock. Watching the minutes tick by and realizing how much sleep you’re losing out on will only stress you out, activating your nervous system and making you feel more alert instead of sleepy. Turn your clock away and focus on step 2 instead.

2. Practice Deep Breathing

Try and keep your mind and body as relaxed as possible by giving your mind something else to focus on besides the fact that you can’t fall asleep. As you lie in bed, progressively tense and relax each of your muscle groups. Start from your head, neck and shoulders and work your way down to your toes. Count your breaths, and slow your breathing.

3. Try Meditating

4.  If You’re Still Awake After 15 Minutes, Get Up And Leave The Room

Post up on the couch in another room, and do a boring, low-key activity by lamplight. This is the perfect time to break out that jigsaw puzzle, or pick up that boring book.
